Aspinall Accuses Gane Of Ducking Him
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Tom Aspinall has revealed that Ciryl Gane rejected the chance to fight him at UFC 304.

Aspinall is the current UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion, while Gane sits second in the rankings. Despite being linked with a fight, Dana White announced that Aspinall would fight Curtis Blaydes in a rematch on June 27. Their first bout ended in a win for Blaydes after Aspinall suffered a knee injury in the first round. But since then, he has come back much stronger. Two first-round KO wins over Marcin Tybura and Sergei Pavlovich have put him close to a title shot against Jon Jones.

However, that fight appears no closer to being made. Jones is currently recovering from an injury, with suggestions he will fight in November after leaking a fight date. His opponent is likely to be Stipe Miocic. That left Aspinall pursing Gane. He has already accused Gane of ducking him and Pavlovich. The Brit claimed Gane avoided Pavlovich before he took the fight, the same thing again with Blaydes. Gane denied that was the case, previously telling Aspinall he was ready to fight.

That fight never happened, which Aspinall confirmed.

Aspinall Reacts

“The UFC wanted me to fight Ciryl Gane, I said, ‘Okay, the UFC wanna do it, we can do it.’ I’m not bothered, I feel like I’m the champion of the world, I’m ranked No. 1 in the world, I’ll fight anybody you don’t have to talk me into anything. The UFC are my bosses, they want me to fight Ciryl Gane, count me in, that’s okay, we’ll do it.

“Ciryl, on the other hand, he’s out there doing a film, Ciryl is trying to be the French Arnold Schwarzenegger right now, and fair play to him. If he wants to do films and be an actor, go and enjoy yourself, Ciryl go and do your thing, make some money, do whatever you doing. But, he didn’t take the fight, he wanted to do his film, so Curtis Blaydes, they’ve thrown him in, very happy with it,” Aspinall stated

Gane’s Future

Nevertheless, it is important to remember the following points. The UFC will hold its third straight event in Paris in three years on September 28. No official fight has been announced.

“We are returning to Paris for the third straight year. This is another one of those destinations that I would have to tell fans if you’ve never been to a fight in Paris, you should probably order your tickets now. See you there in September,” Dana White stated

However, Gane has headlined the previous two events. He stopped Tai Tuivasa in the first event in 2022. That was followed up by a second-round TKO of Serghei Spivac last year. Given Gane has headlined the previous two events, he will likely do this one. Since Aspinall fights in July, the turnaround time is not enough for a fight with Gane in September. However, if both fighters cannot secure the Jon Jones fight, this could be the next best alternative.
