The Tampa Bay Buccaneers closed the book on the 2020 NFL season and their Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs with Wednesday's boat parade that was even better than advertised, and that included a pass of the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the ages, a giddy and giggling Tom Brady, and Tampa Bay wide receiver Chris Godwin allegedly losing his phone in the river all because of fellow wideout Scotty Miller.
The popular perception online was that Miller dropped Godwin's phone into the water, either accidentally or on purpose, but Godwin somewhat cleared his teammate's name during a "Good Morning Football" appearance on Friday, per Nick Shook of the league's official website:
"Honestly, it made the whole memory a lot better. We were on top of the boat, on the front of the boat, and it's a little wobbly, right? So I thought Scotty was gonna fall into the water. I brought my phone out because I was about to go live, and I feel him about to fall, so I go to stop him and his back hit the phone out of my hand and I watched it fall in.
"I'm looking at the police officers that are right next to us, and everyone is like 'Ohh!' And I'm like, 'not oh, get somebody (to) get my phone!' It dove way too fast, man. It was over for as soon as it hit the water."
One phone is an easily replaceable sacrifice to make to the sports gods for football immortality. Perhaps Brady will be willing to replace the missing device for one of his new closest friends:
With the Buccaneers victory, Tom Brady has earned $2.25 million in postseason bonuses per @spotrac.
